It also has a relatively strong resistance to scale and chlorine buildup, making it safer. PEX is safer to operate when it comes to installation, as well. Not only are pipes color coded, but they are also free of toxic chemicals.
What is Copper?
Copper pipes have been the plumbing standard for a very, very long time. Its astounding resistance to corrosion is what made it such a popular choice to begin with. This also leads into its ability to resist bacteria. Copper is not negatively affected by sunlight, so it can safely be used outside.
The disadvantages of copper, however, are clear.
Copper is expensive, and, while it might not corrode easily, PEX won’t corrode at all. Not to mention that, as some may be familiar, copper pipes are prone to freezing and bursting. PEX pipes will never burst.
Which is Best?
If your home has copper piping and isn’t experiencing any issues, there’s no need to call for a total revamp of PEX piping.
However, if you are repairing pipes or building a new home, PEX piping should be your first choice. It is easier to work with and provides so many more benefits that allow it to outshine copper. Of course, the final decision comes down to your plumber. If a professional suggests copper piping, they know best. But, now you know all about the piping that is in your home!
