Why Does My Garbage Disposal Stink?

Unpleasant smells in your kitchen can have you and your family avoiding this room at all costs. If the smell is coming from your sink, it most likely won’t go away on its own. Let’s learn about what can cause a smelly sink and simple ways to fix it!

The Problem

A foul-smelling sink has a lot to do with your garbage disposal. Sinks with disposals allow for food scraps to be discarded down the drain, which helps you avoid a stinking kitchen garbage can. But what happens when your sink starts to smell? The most common reason your kitchen sink will produce a bad smell is that there is rotting food stuck in the disposal.

There are a few things you can do as a homeowner to help eliminate bad odors from your kitchen sink:

  • Run ice cubes through the garbage disposal. This can help food particles to dislodge from the blades of the disposal. This is a good first step, but should be followed up by any of the following solutions.
  • Use orange or lemon rinds. Running rinds of citrus fruits through your garbage disposal can give your drain a pleasant and fresh smell. However, it will not always get rid of what is causing it in the first place. It’s best to use this method after the rotting food has been removed.
  • Purchase natural drain cleaner. Harsh products like Drano and Liquid-Plumbr should be avoided, as they have the potential to harm the piping of your sink. Instead, opt for natural cleaners, as they use enzymes to eat away at food and other materials in your drain without harming the plumbing.
  • Try baking soda. Baking soda is a great product that you already have in your kitchen that helps absorb smells. Pour ¾ cups of baking soda into your sink drain. Follow this up with a cup of boiling water to flush the baking soda out.

The Prevention

Practicing good habits in your kitchen is the best way to prevent your garbage disposal from creating smelly odors. Run hot water through your disposal for about 30 seconds after every use, and always make sure the faucet is running when the disposal is in use.
