Dealing with Water Main Line Issues

When something goes wrong with your water main line, it can be a major inconvenience. But, it’s important not to panic. Sometimes you can see the problem coming, but other times it can take you by complete surprise. Either way, here’s what you should do if you’re dealing with a water main line issue.

water main break

Remove Any Water From Your Home

If you suspect that there has been a main water line break, it’s important that you search your home for water. If there is water inside your home, use a pump to remove it. The sooner the better since you don’t want mold and mildew to grow. After you’ve removed the water from your home, dry it out using fans and dehumidifiers. Lastly, you’ll need to remove any damage that was caused by the wet conditions.

Flush the Pipes

Occasionally, pieces of debris can enter the system and limit or close off a water supply completely. If this is the case, you can try flushing the pipes. The easiest way to do this is by opening a large tap while keeping all other taps closed. This can potentially discharge debris particles in the water line and get your water main line back up and running. If that doesn’t work, it’s best to enlist the help of a plumber to locate and remove the blockage.

Check Your Insurance for Water Main Break Coverage

It’s important to note that the city won’t pay to repair damages to a homeowner’s plumbing system, even if the damage occurred as a result of the water main break. It’s up to the homeowners to cover the cost of repairs. For that reason, it’s important to check your homeowner’s insurance policy to see if they cover “clean water” damage. If your current policy doesn’t cover it, take action now and adjust your policy before you have to deal with a serious water main line issue.

Install a Water Main Filtration System

One of the best ways to keep foreign debris out of your home’s plumbing system is to install a water main filtration system. This filtration system will reduce sediment, sand, and rust that comes from your municipal water system. By filtering out contaminants from your home’s water supply, you can improve water quality and reduce the amount of damage to your plumbing caused by free-floating hazards.
