Most homeowners run into problems with their washing machine at some point or another. Things like leaking, breakdowns, or clothes not coming out clean can impact your daily life.
Let’s look at some of the most common washing machine problems homeowners may encounter.
Leaking
If you are experiencing a leak from your washer you may be very concerned as it can lead to floor damage and if unresolved it can even lead to mold. In many cases, leaks coming from your washing machine are directly related to the drain hose, which can be simply and inexpensively replaced.
In front loading machines the washer may also start to leak because the seal on the front is no longer functioning. This can happen as the seal deteriorates over time, or if something becomes stuck in the seal. Leaking can also come from the tub of the washer, which is probably the worst case scenario, as the washer will probably need to be replaced in its entirity.
Not Draining
If your washing machine is not draining it may be caused by a clogged drain hose. Before calling a professional, you can inspect the drainage hose for any obvious clogs or kinks that may be preventing it from draining. If there is no obvious sign of blockage then the problem may be more serious.
Another potential cause of a washer not draining is a broken drainage pump. In some cases the pump will continue trying to work even when it is clogged, when this happens it is possible for the pump’s belt to break. This type of problem can usually be resolved with a new pump, rather than an entirely new washer.
Not Running
If the washer is simply not turning on, you likely have a power source problem. Make sure your washing machine is properly hooked up into its various power sources. If you determine that the power source is not the problem, you may have a bad motor in your washing machine.
Shaking
Shaking is another common problem in washing machines accompanied with loud, banging noises. This shaking is caused by an off balance machine. This can be caused by the feet of the machine not being level on the ground, or by a load in the washing machine that isn’t turning properly. To fix this check the feet of your washer and make sure they are level on the ground. If this isn’t the problem, call a plumber to take a look at the machine in action.
