Common Summer Plumbing Problems

Plumbing problems can happen anytime during the year, but there are a few problems that tend to happen more during the warm summer months. Plumbing issues are never fun to deal with, but by knowing what issues might arise you can be better prepared and know how to deal with them. Here are some plumbing problems that can happen year round, but are much more likely to occur in the summer months.

Common Summer Plumbing Problems

Sprinkler Problems

Sprinkler problems are most likely to strike during the summer because, you guessed it, that’s when they are in use! If you have a sprinkler system for your lawn during the summer you could run into problems with the system that could wind up costing you a pretty penny.

Having a leak in your sprinkler system could wind up costing you big in the long run, whether you are on city water or have a well. Signs of a problem would be a dramatic increase in your water bill, low pressure in other areas of the home, or parts of the lawn that are more lush and green than others, despite similar environmental factors.

Drain Problems

Drain problems also increase during the summer months because the frequency of showers usually increases. In addition, oftentimes kids are more dirty from playing outside, and all of that dirt goes down the drain.

If you live in an area where your kids are spending time outside and getting especially dirty (such as near the beach or a creek), consider installing an outdoor shower or foot washing spot to prevent that extra dirt from making it into your shower drains.

Rain Problems

The third major area of issues during the summer months relate to excess rainfall. An abundance of rain can lead to sump pump problems and sewer line problems.

Having an extreme amount of rain in a short time can cause the sump pump to fail and rain to end up in your basement. The excess rain can also cause the sewer line to back up and cause a major mess. To prevent these issues it is important to check your sump pump frequently to ensure it is functioning properly.

Plumbing problems are never welcome, and unfortunately many of them are more likely to occur during the summer when you want to be out enjoying the sunshine. But plumbing problems don’t have to hold you back.
