5 Plumbing Tips for Homeowners with a Well Pump

A well pump delivers safe drinking water to your home from a private well. There are two primary types of well pumps and they are jet pumps and submersible sumps. Both types have their advantages and disadvantages, but they both have the same purpose. With proper plumbing maintenance, well pumps can last to around 15 or 20 years. Take a look at some tips to ensure that your well pump lasts for a long time.

Inspect Your Well Pump

Since the system is installed underneath the ground, it’s prone to being exposed to debris and bugs. These bugs can eat away at the wiring of your system and cause your electricity bills to increase substantially. To prevent this from happening, take a few minutes every month to check your well pump system for any signs of bugs, loose wiring, or leaks.

Clean the Inner Components

Like the components that are installed beneath the ground, the well pump itself can accumulate dirt and debris in its inner components. To clean them, turn off the power and pull back the cover to the pressure switch. Then use an emery cloth to remove any residue in between the pressure switch, the aerator, and faucet spout.

Make Adjustments

Adjusting screws for the correct pressure gauges and switches can help you save money on your energy bills and conserve water. You can usually find the manufacturer’s instructions on how to do this properly inside your well pump switch’s cover.

Have Your Water Tested

Since homeowners are responsible for the quality and maintenance of their private well system, it’s up to you to have your water tested to ensure that it is safe for your household. There are several tests that can be done to determine if your water is safe for consumption.

Have Your Well Pump Inspected Annually

The best thing you can do for your well pump is to have it inspected by a professional plumber at least once a year. A professional will come and inspect not only your well pump, but every other component of your well too. They will run multiple tests and inspect the exterior to ensure that everything is safe and working efficiently.
