Whether you’ve just moved into your house or you’ve been there for years it is important to take time to periodically check your water heater for signs of wear and damage. There are some warning signs that can let you know it’s about time to replace the unit, let’s look at a few.
Leaking
Leaking in most cases is a sure sign that it is soon time to replace the water heating unit. To prevent a future plumbing emergency, any leaks you notice should be taken very seriously. In most cases a leak from the heater means it is time for a new tank.
To check for leaks, look closely around the water heater for any signs of moisture, any leaks are worth noting and calling a plumber. If you have a major leak coming from the water heater turn off the water to the house and call the plumber immediately to prevent a major flood.
Dirty Water
Another sure sign that your hot water heater needs to be replaced is if you begin to notice muddy or rusty water coming from your faucets. This could mean that the inside of your water heater tank has begun to rust, which could quickly lead to a major leak. In addition, you don’t want to be drinking or bathing in contaminated water from your water heater.
Costly Repairs
If you have run into some problems with your water heater over the last couple years it may be time to consider replacing it. In general, water heaters don’t require a lot of maintenance, so if you seem to constantly need work done on it, it may be at the end of it’s lifespan.
While some things are a simple fix, you shouldn’t need to have someone repairing your heater on a regular basis. While that may temporarily resolve the problem, you will only be putting a band-aid on the issue.
