5 Signs You Have Water Pressure Problems

When people think about water pressure problems, they usually think of low water pressure. However, high water pressure can be just as bad. While low water pressure is an immediate inconvenience, high water pressure can lead to tons of water wasted and thousands of dollars to repair. Be on the lookout for these five warning signs that you have a high water pressure problem.

1. Leaking Pipes

High water pressure puts a lot of strain on your home’s plumbing system. This often leads to pipe damage and leaks. If left unattended, the leaky pipes can lead to mold growth and other extensive water damage. Unfortunately, these leaks can start small and out of sight, but eventually, the problem gets so bad that things start to smell bad or a large area becomes damaged.

2. Hydraulic Shock (Water Hammer)

If you have noticed a loud banging noise when you suddenly switch off a faucet, it’s known as a “water hammer”. This is a sign that your plumbing is having high water pressure problems. When water flow suddenly stops or switches directions, high water pressure causes your pipes to bang into one another or the surrounding framing.

3. Damaged Appliances

Appliances that use a lot of water, such as your water heater, washing machine, and dishwasher, can become damaged from hard water pressure. This is because when your plumbing experiences hard water pressure, your appliances are using more water than they should. The result is wasted water and wasted money.

4. High Utility Bill

Has your utility bill been abnormally high? Hard water pressure may be to blame. Sometimes it doesn’t have to be a spike in your water bill. If you know that you’re paying more for water than your neighbor, it can mean that you have high water pressure. Your high water bill is because you’re using more water than needed every time you turn on a faucet.

5. Running Toilet

If your toilet seems to keep running or flushing on its own, you may have a faulty fill valve. Your fill valve was likely damaged from the high water pressure. When you have high water pressure, the toilet valve wears out quicker since water is constantly running between the tank and the bowl.
