Prepare Your Plumbing for Holiday Traveling

The holidays are just around the corner, and this is a time where many people travel away from their homes. Whether visiting relatives or just going on vacation, this is supposed to be a great and joyous time of year, and you shouldn’t be worried about your home’s plumbing. Luckily for you, there are a couple of things you can do to make sure your home’s plumbing will hold up just fine while you’re gone. As an experienced Eldersburg, MD plumber we wanted to help you prepare with these tips:

Holiday Travel Plumbing Tips

Turn Off Your Water

By far the most important thing you can do to get your home’s plumbing ready for your going away is to turn off your water. You can’t have any leaks or floods if there’s no water to leak or flood. No matter how long you’re going away for, you should always turn off your main water valve, and you can even turn off each individual valve (washer, dishwasher, etc.) just to be extra careful.

Clean Your Gutters

One of the easiest ways to flood your home is to leave your gutters uncleared. Gutters get clogged by leaves and sticks, and this causes water to pool and overflow onto your home. This problem is made worse in the wintertime by the prospect of snow and ice. Just simply cleaning your gutters of all debris can remove this worry.

Test Your Sump Pump

Your sump pump is your last resort against basement flooding and should be checked regularly. You can check your pump by dumping water into the sump pit and seeing if it ejects it properly. If it doesn’t, then you should probably check with an experienced Eldersburg, MD plumber before you leave.

Drain and Empty Your Dishwasher and Washing Machine

If you leave water or wet things in either your dishwasher or washing machine, then you could come home to smells of mold and mildew. Ensuring these appliances are empty and clean before you head out on your holiday trip can easily prevent this issue. Additionally, you can also leave the doors of these machines open, allowing them to dry and air out while you’re gone, ensuring the prevention of mold and mildew.
