Plumbing Preparations for Vacations

We know you’ve been looking forward to going on your vacation, and you should be, you’ve earned it! But before you leave, there are a couple of things you should do to prepare your home’s plumbing. Here at Michael Runk Plumbing and Heating, we’ve been providing master plumber services to Eldersburg and other areas of Maryland for years, and we wanted to take some time today to discuss a number of plumbing preparations you should make before you leave for your vacation.

plumbing prep before vacation

Turn Off the Water

By far and away the most important thing you can do is turn your water off. By turning off your main water valve, not only will you prevent your pipes from bursting, but you’ll also save some money on your water bill.

Check and Clear Your Gutters

Your gutters are an integral part of your plumbing system, and if they’re filled with debris they can’t drain properly. Before you leave for vacation, you need to make sure that your gutters are cleared, or else you could put your home at risk of flooding. If you do come home to a flooded home, you’ll need to contact an Eldersburg, MD master plumber.

Test Out Your Sump Pump

If you have a sump pump in your basement or cellar, you need to make sure it’s working before you leave, or else you could come back to a flooded basement. You can test the pump by pouring some water into it and making sure that it ejects the water properly.

Drain and Empty Out Your Dishwasher and Washing Machine

By draining both of these appliances, you can prevent mold, mildew, and unpleasant odors. By leaving anything in either, you could return home to some disasters. You may also want to keep the doors open to allow them to air out.

Turn Down Your Water Heater

By adjusting your water heater to the lowest possible setting you can save a considerable amount of money on your energy bill. You could also completely shut it off.
