Garbage Disposal Maintenance Guide

Garbage disposals are exceptionally convenient additions to any home, but they don’t give you license to throw just anything down the drain. Your garbage disposal needs love and care just like any other part of your home’s plumbing and today we’re going to discuss a few ways that you can take good care of it. Let’s talk garbage disposal maintenance.

Watch What You Feed Your Garbage Disposal

Garbage disposals may seem like they can handle anything, but they cannot and should not be asked to handle everything. Things like bones, coffee grounds, onion skins, and other items may cause clogging problems for your garbage disposal if used in excess over a long duration.

Grease and fats can also spell disaster for your garbage disposal. Running hot water down the unit can also make this worse, for the record. While you clean your disposal, you should use cool or warm water; avoid the extremes.

If your garbage disposal just stops working after you’ve put something nasty down its maw, then you may need to reset it. It happens from time to time. There will be a button beneath the disposal unit under your sink. Give it a press and see whether or not your disposal comes back on.

If it doesn’t, then we can take a look at it.

Give Your Garbage Disposal a Good Cleaning

To keep your garbage disposal looking and feeling its best, you’ll want to give it a thorough freshening periodically. To do this, you’ll need some lemons, baking soda, vinegar, and ice cubes. If your drain is emanating a foul smell, then you can cut up a lemon and toss it down the disposal while it is grinding to help eliminate the odors. Follow that fruit up with some ice cubes to help sharpen the blades and crack down on bad smells as well.

Finally, toss a little distilled white vinegar and some baking soda down your drain followed by cool water to finish the job. Harsh cleaners like bleach can cause problems of their own, so proceed with caution and if you’re not sure about the product you have, trust in a professional to help you.
