Why Does My Toilet Keep Clogging?

Nothing is more frustrating than a toilet that always seems to clog. There are several possible reasons why your toilet keeps clogging. If you’ve had enough of reaching for the plunger and dealing with clogged toilets, keep reading to find out some of the possible reasons for clogs, and what you can do to prevent them.

You Have an Old Toilet

Older toilets aren’t equipped with the flushing power that most newer toilets have. Toilets can last anywhere from 25 to 50 years but they can lose flushing power throughout the years. Low flushing power causes frequent clogs. If you have an old toilet that clogs frequently, it might be time to have it replaced.

Something is Blocking the Sewer Lines

Sometimes clogs can exit the plumbing fixtures but get stuck in the home’s main sewer line. Unfortunately, sewer lines can’t be reachable by a plunge, and unblocking them requires the help of a professional plumber. There are several possible causes for a blocked sewer line such as:

  • Flushing materials that aren’t human waste
  • Broken pipes
  • Tree roots growing into the sewer line
  • Corroded metal pipes

There’s a Problem with Your Fill Valve

Your toilet’s fill valve is responsible for making sure there’s enough water inside the tank to flush. When there isn’t enough water in the tank, clogs become more frequent. You can remove the tank lid to look for any obvious signs of damage to your fill valve or hire a plumber to take a look at it for you.

Something is Stuck in the Trap

Sometimes things that aren’t flushable can get stuck in the trap. Things like toothbrushes, utensils, and other solid objects can enter your pipes but never get through the s-shaped portion of the tube. Over time debris will attach to the object and cause clogs. Unfortunately, the only way to resolve this issue is to take the toilet off the floor and get it from the bottom.
