What to Do During a Plumbing Emergency

Plumbing is kind of like your car, you don’t truly appreciate it until it breaks down. Maybe you had a pipe burst and now your basement is flooding, maybe you have an overflowing toilet. No matter what is going wrong, there are a couple of things you need to do to manage and repair your Maryland plumbing.

Shut the Water Off

If something goes wrong, the first thing you should do is turn off your water. This could mean shutting off your home’s main valve, or turning the valve behind your toilet. If water is flowing out, the easiest way to solve the problem is to stop the water!

Get Help Fast

If you are experiencing a plumbing emergency, you should call a Maryland emergency repair plumber. Just as you would call 911 in an emergency, you need to call a plumber during a plumbing emergency. A professional plumber will be able to assess your situation, provide help, and will be able to come out if necessary.

Check in on Your Water Heater

During any kind of plumbing emergency, it can be extremely important to turn off your water heater. If the heater is left on, heat can build up inside. Turn off the main valve first, and if you have a gas water heater, make sure to turn the gas off first. If your heater has already begun to heat up, you should call a trusted Maryland emergency repair plumber, as it could get dangerous.

Clear Out Your Drains

Even if you’ve already turned off your main valve, there could still be water in your pipes. It’s important to drain this water out, or it could cause further potential damage. Open up an outdoor spigot or shoot off the garden hose, just make sure you drain out all of the water.

Plug Any Small Leaks

Plugging up a small leak early could be the difference between a small plumbing problem and a large one. It is definitely a good idea to keep some plumber’s tape around the house for this reason, but if you don’t have any, then some rags or towels can also suffice in the short term. Make note of the leaks, and inform your Maryland emergency repair plumber of them when he/she arrives.

Why Hire a Pro?

Many homeowners prefer to try a DIY approach, in an effort to save some money. While this may be possible for some things, a plumbing emergency should be handled by a professional. One mistake, and your entire home could potentially be under water. When dealing with a serious plumbing emergency, make sure to call a serious Maryland plumber.
