What Can Tree Roots Do to Your Plumbing?

For the most part, trees are a good thing. They provide us with shade, fruits, and oxygen, which are all pretty important. However, for your plumbing, tree roots can cause all sorts of havoc. What you might not know is that roots are actually attracted to your pipes because of the water and nutrients housed within. Here’s what you need to know if you suspect that roots have gotten into your plumbing.

Roots coming out of a pipe

What’s the Big Deal About Roots?

As trees grow, they need water and other nutrients to survive. If they aren’t getting enough nutrition from the soil, then they’re going to send out little “feeder roots” to your pipes. Then, if your pipes have any holes, cracks, or weak spots, those roots are going to get in. In general, pipes need to be free and clear to work optimally. Remember the last time you had a clog? Now imagine that clog is deep beneath the earth. Tree roots aren’t going to be cleared with drano either. They’re strong.

Tree roots are so strong, in fact, that they’re likely to cause lasting damage to your pipe systems and sewer line.

Intrusion can Lead to Clogs and Then to Collapse

As the tree roots spread throughout your pipe system, they will block the pipes. As the pipes are blocked with roots, toilet paper and other waste that would otherwise pass through easily will also start to get caught. As this continues, any damage to the pipe will only get worse. Cracks will get bigger and weakened sections will likely fail. At some point, the pipes may completely collapse. This is pretty bad and you will definitely need a professional to come out and get this fixed.

What Should You Do Now?

If you suspect that there are tree roots in your plumbing or sewer line, you need to call in a professional right away. Even if you only think the problem is in its infancy, it’s still best to get started on a solution before things get out of control. Not to mention the fact that there is a major difference between having a clog cleared and replacing your sewer line in terms of pricing. Save a little money and a little heartache by addressing the problem now.
