The Difference Between Residential and Commercial Plumbing

Plumbing is essential to virtually every building. Every plumbing system uses the same basic materials and performs the same function. However, the type of building can slightly change the plumbing system’s needs. Take a look at the three biggest differences between residential and commercial plumbing.

Residential Plumbing

Size

Residential buildings tend to require fewer pipes and outlets than commercial buildings. Think about it, a home has bathrooms with one toilet, one sink, and a shower. Commercial buildings usually have bathrooms with multiple sinks and multiple toilets. All of those toilets and sink fixtures need to have pipes and outlets for them to work.

Also, more people use these fixtures in commercial buildings. In order for the plumbing system to keep up with the demand, they need to be bigger than in a commercial home. Could you imagine if 20 people came and flushed the toilets in your house in a short period of time? That would be a nightmare because your home’s plumbing doesn’t have the capacity to handle it.

Problems

Homes and residential buildings usually encounter the same types of problems, but there are times where they have their respective problems. Since commercial plumbing is bigger and used more often they experience problems such as:

  • Faucet leaks
  • Running toilets
  • Broken toilet handles
  • Silent Leaks

Residential buildings experience problems related to their kitchens and showers, something that is less likely with commercial buildings. Some of the most common problems for residential plumbing are:

  • Jammed garbage disposal
  • Clogged bath or shower drain
  • Clogged toilet

Multiple Floors

Office buildings along with other types of residential buildings usually have multiple levels while residential buildings usually don’t have any more than three. All of those levels require some sort of plumbing but for commercial buildings, gravity plays a huge factor. It makes sure that pipes properly work and that the water pressure is just right. A commercial plumber knows how to set up and maintain the plumbing system needed for multileveled commercial buildings.
