How to Unclog Your Toilet With No Plunger

Whether your plunger is broken or you never got around to purchasing one to begin with, there’s no need to worry about fixing a minor clog. Here are some ways to unclog your toilet without a plunger and what to do if the clog needs more than a quick fix.

Option #1: The Hot Water Method

Fill up a bucket with very hot water from the bathtub and pour it into the toilet quickly from about waist-height. The heat will help break up toilet paper and the force of the water may dislodge clogged items. Avoid using boiling water, as this could cause porcelain cracks in your toilet.

Option #2: The Dish Soap Method

Add approximately ½ cup of liquid dish soap to your toilet bowl and let it sit for a few minutes, then flush. The slippery consistency of the soap will help to lubricate the clogged pipe and allow buildup to slide through more easily.

Option #3: The Baking Soda Method

Adding one cup of baking soda and two cups of vinegar to your toilet bowl can also be helpful in breaking up debris and lubricating your pipes. Let the liquids sit in the bowl for 30 minutes, and if that doesn’t fix the clog, try adding hot water then flush.

Option #4: The Wire Hanger Method

A more aggressive method that often proves successful is untwisting a wire hanger so that it is straight and sticking it down into your plumbing to break up the clogged mass. If you have to resort to this method, however, it’s usually best to get a professional out to take a look at your plumbing, as there might be a larger issue that could potentially cause major damage if not repaired.
