How to Clean Your Sump Pump

Your sump pump plays a significant role in protecting your home’s foundation from flooding. That’s why it’s important that it’s always clean and in good working condition. Keeping it clean will keep the pump working properly and help you avoid expensive damages. Here’s an easy, step-by-step guide to cleaning your sump pump:

How to clear your sump pump

1. Turn Off and Disconnect

To check to see if your sump pump is off, examine the float switch and ensure that it’s in a low position and not floating upwards. You can also turn it off at the circuit breaker.

2. Cover

Cover your sump pump with plastic to prevent spills and carry it outside.

3. Rinse it Off

Using a garden hose, rinse off any dirt or sludge from its surface. Use a plastic scraper or putty knife to clean out caked-on debris. Once you’ve rinsed the sump pump, leave it in a safe place to dry outside.

4. Drain Your Sump Pit

While your sump pump is drying, drain the sump pit of all standing water. Use a shop vac to do this.

5. Disassemble Check Valve

If your sump pit has a check valve that can be clogged, carefully disassemble it and allow water to drain out of the check valve.

6. Remove and Clean Check Valve

Like you did with your sump pump, thoroughly rinse the check valve with water and set it to dry. Afterward, reassemble it.

7. Reattach Pump

After your sump pump has dried, reattach it to the discharge pipe.

8. Plug it Back in

Lastly, plug your sump pump back in, and voila! You now have a clean sump pump and sump pit.

Check for Signs of Damage

Throughout the cleaning process, be sure to inspect every part of your sump pump for signs of damage. Look to see if any components are cracked or otherwise damaged. If you notice damage, have a residential plumber in Westminster, MD repair it for you. Do not put it off. Doing so could lead to extensive damage and expensive repairs due to a malfunctioning sump pump.
