5 Winter Plumbing Myths Every Homeowner Should Know

Your home’s plumbing is a complex system. The winter season is notorious for being rough on your plumbing. However, there are some myths that are simply not true. With the winter quickly approaching, be sure to avoid these five common plumbing myths.

Myth #1: Turn Your Heating Off When You Go Away to Save Money

Yes, turning your heating off when you leave your house for an extended period of time can save you money on your heating bills, but it can cause significant damage. Your pipes can freeze and burst if you decide to do this, therefore costing you money to repair. Instead of turning off your heating when you leave, consider putting it on a low setting.

Myth #2: You Can Thaw Your Pipes With an Open Flame

If your pipes are frozen, don’t make the situation worse by trying to thaw them by putting an open flame to the pipes. This action could damage your pipes and increase the likelihood of a flood occurring. Instead, you can try wrapping a warm cloth around the pipes.

Myth #3: Always Let Your Faucets Drip

A lot of people believe that it’s a good idea to always leave their faucets dripping to help circulate water and relieve pressure. It’s fine to do this occasionally, but don’t always let your faucets drip. It can make your water bill unnecessarily high and won’t serve much of a  purpose.

Myth #4: Choose Plastic Pipes Over Copper Pipes

There’s a misconception that copper pipes are more likely to freeze than plastic pipes. The truth is that your pipes freeze depending on whether they have water stored in them, the temperature, and the pipe width. Both plastic and copper pipes have the potential to freeze.

Myth #5: You Can Easily Do Plumbing Work On Your Own

While some of us may be tempted to resolve a plumbing problem on our own, it’s usually not the best idea. If you lack the experience working with a complex plumbing system, you risk further damaging it. Let a certified MD plumber handle your plumbing needs.
