5 Ways to Reduce Your Monthly Water Bill

Did you know that you may be overpaying on your water bill? There are several ways your water bill might be higher than it should be. With that being said, there are several things you can do to lower your water bill. Read through these five tips to start conserving water at home.

5 ways to reduce your water bill

1. Inspect Your Appliances

One of the most common causes of a high water bill is leaky fixtures. A leaky faucet may not seem like a big deal at first, but over time, gallons of water could be wasted. As a result, you will end up overpaying on your water bill. It’s easy to check around your house for leaky fixtures, specifically around toilets, faucets, and dishwashers.

2. Install Low-Flow Toilets

Older, conventional toilets can use anywhere from five to seven gallons of water per flush. That’s a lot of water. Low-flow toilets, however, use as little as 1.6 gallons per flush. This simple change easily saves you money on your monthly water bill. If you can’t afford a low-flush toilet, try filling a plastic bottle with water and leaving it in the tank. Now, it takes far less water to fill the tank.

3. Add Aerators to Faucets

A faucet aerator is a small, round device that screws on the tip of your faucet to create a more consistent and splash-free stream. Since it attaches to the faucet head, it acts as a sieve to reduce the amount of water coming through the faucet.

4. Upgrade to Energy Star Appliances

Investing in Energy Star appliances will help you save money in the long term. These appliances allow you to cut back on both your water and energy consumption. You can also find local savings, tax credits, and discounts to make the switch easier. Consider swapping out your current dishwasher and washing machine for a more efficient Energy Star device.

5. Install Efficient Showerheads

We all love warm showers, and most people know taking shorter showers saves water. If you need some extra time in the shower, reduce your water consumption by installing efficient showerheads. Efficient showerheads have a flow rate of no more than 2.5 gallons a minute.
