Dealing With Hard Water In Your Home Proactively

drainDid you know that over 85% of the United States has hard water? This means that almost everyone in the country has had to deal with hard water at one point or another. Hard water can cause many issues, ranging from filmy hair to higher utility bills. Fortunately, there are many different ways that you can deal with hard water. You can install a water softener, or you can use many less intensive methods. At Michael Runk Plumbing, we understand the issues that hard water causes and are here to offer our services for water softener installation and other solutions.

What is Hard Water?

Water is considered hard when it has a high content of mineral salts, particularly magnesium ions and calcium. Water acquires these minerals as it travels through sand, soil, and rock on its way to our homes. There are a few ways to test for hard water. You can bring a sample of your water to a local lab, or you could purchase a test kit. While hard water is not detrimental to your health, it does have many other disadvantages.

Problems Caused by Hard Water

Hard water can cause many issues for you, your wallet, and your home. First, the minerals in hard water can cause clogs in your pipes. It can also create film on your bathroom and kitchen tiles and fixtures, your skin, your hair, and your glasses and dishes. Furthermore, hard water can decrease the longevity of your water heater and increase your utility bills because of an accumulation of scale. Hard water can also decrease how long your clothes last because of the high mineral content. It will reduce the ability of your detergent to form suds, which causes a dingy appearance to your clothes and even a slight gray color.

Solutions for Hard Water

There are a variety of possible solutions to your hard water issues. First, you can install a water softener. This will have immediate and continuous benefits; however, a water softener can be costly both in terms of the unit and the amount of water and electricity it uses. To handle hard water naturally, you can boil your water prior to use. There are also many soaps, laundry detergents, and shampoos specifically designed for use in hard water. A solution for the dishwasher is to use distilled vinegar; this will cut down on the while film that appears.
